Antonin Scalia Says Humanity Is 5,000 Years Old

At about 2:35 into the video, Antonin Scalia says humanity is 5,000 years old.

I debated whether or not to post this, but I find it terrifying when I learn that our top government officials believe this kind of nonsense. If he believes this, what else does he believe that might affect his judgement? That adulterers should be stoned, maybe? Unfortunately, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is not our only government official who believes this stuff. Most of them apparently do.

The science is firm and virtually all scientists agree, the earth is about 4.5 billion years old; and humanity has been here over 100,000 years. These are not guesses, and nobody had to be there. It was determined by radioactive dating. No, not carbon 14; because that’s only good for about 60 thousand years. Uranium dating and several other types all agree on the dates.

The 5,000 years presumably comes from the Bible, except that he even got that wrong. The actual bible date arrived at by adding up all the “begats” is about 6,000 years. The man doesn’t even know his own superstition. Actually, now that I think of it, maybe that’s good.

According to the Youtube blurb, “Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was the commencement speaker at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart.” A Catholic school. So it’s possible he was only telling them what they wanted to hear, rather than what he personally believes. It’s a crying shame that many politicians feel they have to do that. (Listen to most of the Republican presidential candidates, for example.)

But Antonin Scalia is no politician. Supreme Court justices hold office for life, or until they decide to retire. He has no need to play the game. He evidently believes this nonsense.

I don’t know which is worse anyway, believing it or pretending to believe it.
