Be wary of this man.

blame I think this may be the guy I wrote about yesterday. Remember? The one who said, “God is watching over us” while eleven people died? Be wary of this man.

I just found this guy’s picture on Facebook and thought I ought to post it here, because you probably know him. If not, you almost certainly know somebody like him.

He’s conservative; he probably votes Republican, though he’ll tell you he’s politically independent; and he thinks the United States is a Christian nation, even though our Constitution never mentions Christ. He loves sinners–well, except maybe faggots and godless, atheistic secular humanists–and wants to save them from themselves and the world from them. He honors the presidency of the United States, but despises our President; and he loves our country so much he wants to tear up the Constitution and establish a theocracy. By force, if necessary.

He’ll tell you climate change is “the biggest fraud ever perpetrated against the American people,” even as we complete the hottest year in the history of climate studies. He’ll lie to your face and claim it’s not true that 13 of the 14 hottest years on record have been since the turn of this century and the other one was 1998. He’ll laugh about the possibility that sea level could rise enough to notice, even while small island nations prepare to be swallowed up by the waves.

He’ll say that “if you tell your kids they came from animals, they’ll act like animals.” Then he’ll claim we were all made out of dirt.

This man is a Fundamentalist. What makes him dangerous is not just that he’s so wrong about so many things, but that he’s absolutely certain he is right about them. Ask him what could potentially shake his faith in his beliefs and he’ll probably answer truthfully, “Absolutely nothing.” He is so certain, in fact, that he wants you to live your life according to the dictates of his conscience.

Saudi Arabia is ruled by men just as certain of their wrong ideas. Iran is ruled by men just as certain of their wrong ideas. North Korea is ruled by a man just as certain of his wrong ideas. America needs leaders who get their ideas and ideals from science and reason and compassion, and who understand they might be wrong about anything they believe and willing to learn better.

Be wary of this man. Be very wary of this man

Change Climate Change

Samantha Says “Change Climate Change”

I believe her.
Astronaut Samantha Christoforetti wants to "Change Climate Change."
Astronaut Samantha Christoforetti wants to “Change Climate Change.”

Samantha Cristoforetti, born in Milan in 1977, boarded the International Space Station on November 23, 2014, becoming became the first Italian woman in space. She wants to “Change Climate Change.”

She was a US foreign exchange student attending Space Camp when she was 18. Now she has a degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Munich, and has studied in France and Russia and graduated in Aeronautics Sciences at the Italian Accademia Aeronautica in Pozzuoli, becoming a lieutenant and fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force. Besides all that, she speaks five languages.

We Must Change Climate Change

I’ve shown her here to discuss her message: Change Climate Change.

No matter what your friends tell you, or your politicians, or even the doctor in your group who likes to think of himself as a scientist … and no matter what you want to believe, climate change is both real and dangerous; and we are causing it. The physics is well understood and the satellites monitoring the planet’s temperature show the lower atmosphere is warmer almost every year that ever before.

Those of us alive now won’t see the worst effects  of it, but our children and grandchildren and their grandchildren will. And it won’t be fun.

We need to change climate change now.

400 ppm Carbon Dioxide

400ppm Carbon Dioxide
400ppm Carbon Dioxide

I copied this tweet from Former Vice President Al Gore a few minutes ago. I don’t have the resources to quickly verify it; but I know it is approximately true. And generally, I accept the VP’s facts as true (always pending verification, of course), whether or not I always agree with his opinions and interpretations.

We know the carbon dioxide concentration in the air has been increasing for around 200 years, and even longer to some extent. If there are actually 400 parts per million (ppm) of it in the air now, this is a huge 60% increase from the 250 ppm or so 200 years ago.

But won’t green plants take it back out? After all, that’s what they do. Green plants take carbon diode out of the air and convert it to sugars to energize the plants.

Unfortunately, we are putting carbon dioxide into the air faster than plants can take it out. Until we make some serious changes in the way we live, we’ll just keep on adding carbon dioxide to the air faster than it can be removed. This means the concentration will go up and up and up.

Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas (We need to discuss what that means soon.), it will tend to increase global temperatures and create changes in our climates. That is happening now.

Eventually, it will change the chemistry of the oceans in extremely detrimental ways.We don’t know how soon that will be. It is probably already happening.

Eventually, though it will not be really soon, the carbon dioxide we keep on putting into the atmosphere will choke our civilization and destroy it. We don’t want that, so we need to find ways now, as a society, to stop putting so much carbon dioxide into the air.

Thanks, Bill and Steve

Thanks to Bill Moyers and Steve Mirsky for letting us know about this guy.

How can an ignoramus like this get elected to Congress? Much less become Chairman of the Science Subcommittee on Oversight of  the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology? He doesn’t understand the science he is supposed to regulate. He thinks it is “lies from the pit of hell.”

I first read about Paul Broun in Scientific American, December2012, Antigravity, by Steve Mirsky. He was in this position then, and he still is. As well as being a member of several other important committees.

Surely the State of Georgia can do better than to let this man run un-opposed again. Get him out of the House of Representatives and back into medical practice where he can only hurt one person at a time.

On second thought, he ought to have his license to practice medicine revoked, too. Do you really want a doctor who thinks that much of what he was taught in medical school is “straight from the pit of hell”? Including not just evolution and cosmology, but embryology, too?

And if Georgia won’t stop electing him, isn’t there at least some way to get him off any science-related committees?
